2014 Vegas odds on the 140th Kentucky Derby got the Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing started with a win by the favorite. California Chrome finished 1 3/4 lengths ahead of 37 to 1 sleeper Commanding Curve, who nearly shocked the horse racing world with a very strong finish. Danza, also considered one of the top pre-race favorites, finished in third, just ahead of Wicked Strong, Samraat and Dance With Fate. The field finished Ride On Curlin, Medal Count, Chitu, We Miss Artie, General a Rod, Intense Holiday, Candy Boy, Uncle Sigh, Tapiture, Harry's Holiday, Vinceremos, Wildcat Red and Vicar's In Trouble. California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn, who bred the questionably pedigreed colt from an $8,000 mare and a $2,500 stallion, believes that '... this horse will win the Triple Crown.' Having now won his last five starts by a combined and impressive 25 lengths heading into the Preakness Stakes on May 17, California Chrome will nonetheless face serious competition in his race for Triple Crown immortality. Ride On Curlin trainer 'Bronco' Billy Gowan is one of many that are 'itching for another go' at California Chrome, and a strong field is already being compiled.

Opening at 60-1 is the Hopeful winner, Competitive Edge. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the colt will have every opportunity to excel on the Derby Trail, but the Breeders' Cup is likely not on his radar. He was diagnosed with a season-ending injury on Tuesday. However, if anyone can get him back to the races, it's Pletcher. This confidence is reflected in the colt's current odds, which are at 50-1. Competitive Edge is owned by Nancy Favreau, Kathy Psoinos and Michael Tabor.
The first horse to earn Kentucky Derby points, Lucky Player, opened at 60-1. The colt trained by Steve Asmussen won Churchill's Iroquois Stakes, earning the first 10 points on the Derby trail on Sept. 6. Lucky Player is a Florida-bred from the first crop by 2010 Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky.
Finally, the 'celebrity babies' of the 2015 Kentucky Derby trail also make their first appearance in a betting line: Zenyatta's colt by Bernardini, Cozmic One, and the Horse of the Year pairing of Rachel Alexandra and Curlin, Jess's Dream. Both were installed at 60-1 on the opening line, but surprisingly, both colts have drifted up to 75-1 as of today. Cozmic One recorded his first timed workout for trainer John Sherriffs on Sept. 12, though no firm plans have been announced as to his first start. Jess's Dream joined trainer Kiaran McLaughlin at Saratoga in August, but has yet to record an official workout.
